Lawman Armor: Secrets Car Thieves Don't Want Us to Know, Techniques Used To Fuel Black Market Trade in Auto Parts

PHILADELPHIA -- Recent reports note that the black market in stolen car parts is booming. Certain parts are sought after because they have either been discontinued, are too expensive to purchase, or highly interchangeable among subsequent years/models. Specific vehicles are targeted by car thieves and stripped of these parts, which are easily sold on the black market.

"Secrets Car Thieves Don't Want Us To Know" describes how easily a thief can pop a lock, notes an instructional book well-circulated in their trade that helps them break into keyless cars, how they employ a hacksaw to cut the steering wheel in half, how they pull off the lock bar, work a screw driver through the steering column to access the ignition, and drive away in 60 seconds or less. The precious parts are then taken off further fueling the trade in black market goods.

The "Secrets" are on DVD and part of an infomercial about a "deadbolt" type lock that is used to keep cars exactly where they are parked so they can't be moved and stripped. The thief may be able to break in, disable the anti-theft deterrents, and start the car. But he is unable to move a car that is using the "deadbolt" type lock (AutoLock). Drills, hammers, crowbars can't budge the AutoLock; it is virtually impossible to take out.

Popular theft-prone vehicles are no longer easy prey.

How the deadbolt (AutoLock) works

Since a car's brake or clutch pedal must be depressed before moving the vehicle, the would-be thief cannot drive it when one or the other is inoperable. Users of Lawman's AutoLock slide the lock over the top of the pedal, pull the handle up and it automatically locks the pedal in place. The AutoLock has thick steel construction and a solid steel lock, which are impervious to drill and saw. Opening the lock cylinder requires a laser-cut encrypted four-sided key that cannot be duplicated. The cylinder is virtually pickproof. There is no master key. A bright yellow cover for the steering wheel and window decals will warn intruders there is an AutoLock on the brake or clutch pedal.
